DESCRIPTION
Malena is our longest stay dog, having been with us since she was a tiny puppy in 2014. Heartbreakingly, she has never had any real adoption interest, and all these years later she is still a resident of the boarding kennels we work with. For her, the boarding kennel is her home, and while she is settled and used to the routine, we still hold out a glimmer of hope that perhaps somewhere, a very special home has a Malena shaped space just waiting to be filled.
Malena was born in the pound, and she has been a very insecure, nervous dog from the very beginning. This could be due to genetics, what she observed in her mother (who was also at the pound), and the lack of socialisation and exposure to new stimuli during critical periods. The result is a very very timid girl, who does not have the confidence to approach for attention, preferring to keep to herself and hide away if possible.
When volunteers have been close to Malena, she has let them touch her, and she has never shown any signs of aggression in these moments. Malena's ideal home would be in a rural area, with a fully fenced garden. This must be extremely secure, and she would likely need to be on a long line outdoors, as she is very much a flight risk if spooked by something, and it would be extremely difficult to catch her if she did get out.
She would need a family who understand that she may never be the type of dog that runs over for affection and cuddles - or perhaps never feels comfortable walking on a lead. She will need everything to go at her pace, with commitment and patience to letting her progress as quickly or slowly as she needs.
Malena shares her space with other male dogs, and she gets on with them. While we do feel the support of a resident four-legged friend in her new home, this would need to be a larger male dog, as she is not good with female dogs. She cannot be tested with cats or small furries.
Due to her nervous nature, we would suggest an adult only home, with experienced owners, who particularly want to help a more "complicated" dog to find a home. Perhaps a person or a couple with a fixed routine, and without visitors she would need to interact with as she would find this very stressful.
If you have a big heart and the time, patience and understanding a dog like Malena needs, please get in touch.
